Week of September 19th-23rd
Math- Kindergarten math will be working on identifying triangles and squares and comparing shapes. We will also be sequencing and writing numbers 1-10. Kindergarten math will come home on Monday and will be due on the following Monday, September 26th. First grade is will be taking their first unit test next week. They will also be reviewing basic addition. Please help your child practice addition and subtraction facts. Homework will come home Monday and will be due by the following Monday. If it's completed early, they can turn it in at any time. Second grade will be working with strategies that use double facts. We will also continue learning about equations (vertically and horizontally). All students have logged onto sumdog. For those of you not familiar, Sumdog is a free math program the students will be using throughout the school year. Each student has a login and password, which can be used at home. If your child does not remember his/ her password, please check with his/her teacher.
Literacy- Our K-2 mini lessons will be working on phonemic awareness (hearing sounds and breaking them apart). We will start FastBridge literacy testing Monday. This is taking the place of PALS. 1st and 2nd grade Fountas and Pinnell reading level testing has been completed (some kindergarten as well). Please read the book in the book bags each night and return it each morning. Remember to record the title of the book, minutes read and return everyday.
Projects: We had a parent offer to bring in baby chicks Monday to show the students. Last year we tried to hatch chicks and it was not successful, so the kids will be excited to finally see baby chicks! On Tuesday we will be starting our first Project Lead the Way kit (PLTW). We will be learning about properties of matter. We're in the process of setting up a field trip as a culmination to this unit. It is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 12th. Watch for a form to come home early next week.
If you are emailing about your child, please include the three of us in your email so we are all on the same page. Attendance emails should also include Rachel Maas (our school secretary).
